Specialist Focused Shockwave Therapy for Calcific Tendinitis

Struggling with sharp, stabbing shoulder pain that feels like it’s locking up?

Our specialist clinic in Richmond provides a non-invasive, evidence-based treatment option for calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder (and other areas), helping clients across the UK improve pain and restore movement.

Focused shockwave therapy (fSWT) is a well-established treatment for calcific tendinopathy of the rotator cuff. Clinical studies show it can improve pain and shoulder function and may help reduce calcific deposits in the tendon. [Source: PubMed Calcific Tendinitis 2014]

Unlike traditional physiotherapy alone or surgery, fSWT uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate a biological response in the tendon and support the body’s natural resorption of calcium deposits, often providing relief where other treatments have failed.

What Is Calcific Tendinopathy?

Calcific tendinopathy is a condition characterised by the formation of calcium deposits within a tendon, most commonly affecting the rotator cuff of the shoulder, although other tendons may also be affected. These deposits can cause pain, inflammation, and reduced range of motion in the affected joint.

The exact cause of calcium deposit formation is not always clear, but it is believed to be related to degenerative changes in the tendon.
The calcium deposits often form as a result of tissue damage or inflammation. Repetitive strain or injury to the shoulder or other affected area can increase the risk of developing calcific tendinitis.

The pain is most intense during the resorptive phase when the body tries to heal. Our high-energy focused shockwave assists this process through mechanical fragmentation, allowing the body to reabsorb the calcium fragments more efficiently and naturally.

Differential Diagnosis: Identifying Sharp Pain

The intense pain of calcium deposits can mimic other acute issues. We assess for:

  • Achilles Tendinopathy: Calcium deposits can form within the tendon, but the pain could be from a tendinopathy.
  • Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid sac that often coexists with, but is distinct from, bone-like calcification.
  • Frozen Shoulder: While both are painful, calcific tendinopathy usually retains more range of movement.
  • Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy: Generalised wear of the tendon without the presence of hard calcium deposits.

Benefits of Focused Shockwave Therapy for Calcific Tendinitis

Effective Surgery Alternative

fSWT is a highly successful alternative to Barbotage (needle aspiration) or surgical excision, with zero downtime.

High Clinical Success Rates

Research consistently shows success rates of up to 85% for resolving calcific deposits in the shoulder or other affected area.

Precision Targeting

We use millimetre-accurate focused energy to target the deposit without irritating the surrounding healthy tendon tissue.

When to Consider Focused Shockwave Therapy for Calcific Tendinitis

Severe Night Pain

If you are unable to find a comfortable position to sleep due to intense pain.

Loss of Movement

If you have reduced functional ability eg reaching overhead.

Confirmed Diagnosis

If an X-ray or ultrasound has already identified a calcium deposit in your rotator cuff or other area.

Failure of Cortisone

If steroid injections have provided only temporary relief or failed to address the underlying deposit.

Early intervention with focused shockwave therapy can break down calcium deposits and relieve pain, promoting faster healing and avoiding prolonged discomfort.

FAQs – Calcific Tendinitis & Focused Shockwave Therapy

Q: Does the calcium actually disappear?

A: Yes. In many cases, follow-up imaging shows a significant reduction or complete disappearance of the deposit as the body reabsorbs the fragments broken down by the focused shockwave.

Q: Is it painful to break down the calcium?

A: The treatment targets the deposits directly and can be intense, but the intensity is fully adjustable and we work strictly within your pain tolerance.

Q: How many sessions will I need?

A: We recommend a minimum of 5 to 8 sessions to ensure the biological resorption process is fully triggered. You may need more sessions depending on the size of the deposits.
