Specialist Shockwave for Chronic Wound & Ulcer Healing
Are you struggling with a chronic wound or ulcer that's taking time to heal despite standard dressings and care?
Our specialist clinic in Richmond, London provides advanced focused shockwave therapy (fSWT) for non-healing wounds, offering a breakthrough medical intervention to stimulate the body’s natural repair cycle.
Chronic wounds - such as diabetic foot ulcers, pressure sores, or venous ulcers - often become stuck in the inflammatory phase.
Focused shockwave therapy uses precise acoustic pulses to stimulate the surrounding tissue, triggering the healing process. This non-invasive approach is helping clients nationwide close slow healing wounds and reduce the risk of secondary infections.

Why Do Some Wounds Not Heal?
A wound becomes chronic when it fails to progress through the normal stages of healing for more than 4–6 weeks.
These wounds are often associated with:
- Poor blood circulation - Limited blood supply impairs the delivery of oxygen and nutrients essential for healing.
- Infection - Chronic ulcers are susceptible to infection, which can further delay healing.
- Underlying health conditions - Conditions like diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and immobility contribute to the development and persistence of ulcers.
With focused shockwave therapy, we can deliver acoustic energy directly to the area surrounding the wound with a high level of precision.
Differential Diagnosis: Identifying Slow-Healing Tissue
Focused shockwave is highly effective at stimulating blood flow to stubborn wounds. We distinguish these from:
- Peripheral Neuropathy: Nerve damage (common in diabetic patients) that may be the underlying cause of the lack of sensation and healing.
- Scar Tissue/Adhesions: Thickened, restrictive tissue that may be preventing healthy circulation to the wound site.

Benefits of Focused Shockwave Therapy for Non-Healing Wound Ulcers
Accelerated Healing
Clinical trials have shown focused shockwave therapy can significantly speed up the closure rate of chronic ulcers.
Effective Pain Relief
Many clients experience a reduction in pain associated with chronic ulcers following shockwave therapy sessions.
Reduces Risk of Complications
By promoting faster healing and reducing infection risks, shockwave therapy can help prevent complications such as ulcer enlargement or the need for more invasive treatments such as surgery.
Improved Tissue Quality
Encourages the formation of high-quality granulation tissue, which is the foundation for healthy new skin.
When to Consider Focused Shockwave Therapy for Non-Healing Wound Ulcers
Diabetic foot ulcers
To help prevent complications and support the healing of high-pressure areas on the foot.
Venous or arterial ulcers
When poor circulation has caused skin breakdown.
Post-surgical wounds
If an incision has dehisced (opened up) or is healing much slower than expected.
Pressure sores
To stimulate repair in early-stage sores before they progress.
Early intervention with shockwave therapy can accelerate healing by enhancing blood circulation, reducing inflammation, promoting new tissue growth, and potentially disrupting bacterial biofilms, thus helping to close the wound faster and prevent further complications, such as infections or the need for surgical intervention.
FAQs –Non-Healing Wound Ulcers & Focused Shockwave Therapy
Q: Is the treatment applied directly to the open wound?
A: No. We use a sterile gel between the shockwave head and the area around the wound to stimulate healing.
Q: Is it painful?
A: Most clients with chronic ulcers have some degree of reduced sensation (neuropathy) or localized pain. We adjust the energy levels to ensure the treatment is comfortable. Most people feel a gentle pulsing sensation.
Q: How many sessions will I need?
A: Wound healing is a gradual process. We typically recommend at least 5 to 8 sessions. More may be required depending on the size and age of the ulcer and the presenting condition.
Q: Can this replace my regular dressing changes?
A: No. Shockwave is a combination therapy. You must continue to see your nurse or podiatrist for regular debridement and dressing changes.

If you want first class therapy you will not do better than Nim. She is very experienced and professional. She is very pleasant while giving you sound advice. Nim also has the amazing shockwave machine which was the best treatment for my challenging patella tendon problems. Highly recommended.
After 2.5 years of problems with my collarbone, the shockwaves helped me immensely. Nim was great and very professional throughout - before and after pics!
I was unable to play tennis due to hamstring tendinopathy for many months and it did not improve until I had a course of shockwave treatments which have been very successful. Nim is very pleasant and is genuinely interested and enthusiastic about seeing an improvement in your condition. She is very knowledgeable and information and advice she gives is always based on up to date research.
I was recommended focused shockwave therapy for a hamstring tendinopathy that had not been resolved through traditional physio. I found Nim, and her treatment has been excellent. After years of pain, I am delighted with the results. She is so knowledgeable and I've learnt a lot from her. How I approach sports training has changed forever for the good! She is also a lovely and interesting person to talk to: I always learned something new in each treatment session.
It’s difficult to know where to start but I found Nim after hearing a podcast about shockwave therapy, Google led me there and my first meeting with her gave me the reassurance to give her a go.
I suffered a spinal fracture nearly ten years ago, recurring sciatica, lower back pain, daily aches and stiffness. A diagnosis of arthritis and years of chiropractors, osteo’s, physio’s and rheumatologists.
Nim took one look at me and noticed my pelvic twist, my imbalance caused from years of compensating for pain. Coupled with focused shockwave to repair the damage that never properly healed and targeted stretches, nothing rocket science or hard to fit in to a busy schedule. Now I am pain free for the first time that I can remember, my mobility has returned and the ‘arthritis’ gone.
Thankyou Nim, you are a true healer and proof that there is help out there if you are strong and willing enough to refuse a lifelong diagnosis and find the help you need. 11 stars from me.
