Focused Vs. Radial Shockwave Therapy: Key Differences Explained
Shockwave therapy is a highly effective form of non-invasive treatment. When combined with physiotherapy, it can treat a broad range of conditions.
There are two types of shockwave therapy:
Focused Shockwave Therapy (fSWT) and Radial Shockwave Therapy (rSWT).
Each type has unique benefits, and choosing the right treatment can make a significant difference to your rehabilitation.
Learn how they differ, which conditions they treat best, and which may be right for you.

Key Differences Between Focused and Radial Shockwave
- Focused shockwave therapy is more versatile, and uses high energy soundwaves to treat a broad range of conditions. It is used in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, orthopaedics, sports medicine, urology, neurology, cardiology, dermatology and veterinary departments.
- Radial shockwave therapy uses pressure waves and is suitable for treating large muscle groups with superficial conditions and cellulite.
-
Focused Shockwave (fSW)
- Type of wave - Soundwave
- Penetration Depth - 0-12.5cm
- Energy Focal Point - Strongest inside tissue
- Energy Capacity - High
- Precision - High/Focused with maximum strength throughout the wave
- Condition Range - Large and deep
- Pain - Low
- Effective with chronic conditions - Yes
-
Radial Shockwave (rSW)
- Type of wave - Pressure wave
- Penetration Depth - 3-5cm
- Energy Focal Point - Strongest at handpiece
- Energy Capacity - Low
- Precision - Low. Spreads on contact with the skin and becomes weaker
- Condition Range - Small and superficial
- Pain - Mid-High
- Effective with chronic conditions - Depends on condition
Understanding these differences can help you decide which treatment may be best for your injury or condition.
Which Shockwave Therapy is Right for You?
Choosing the right type of shockwave therapy depends on your condition, severity, and treatment goals. Focused Shockwave is often recommended for acute, chronic, and deep conditions, as it can target specific tissues at a cellular level. In contrast, Radial Shockwave is more suited to superficial conditions such as treating cellulite.
Note: Many clinics offer "shockwave therapy" without specifying the technology used; in most cases, these are radial machines. Because the two treatments work differently, we recommend confirming the technology before committing to a course of treatment.
At Be Vibrant Physio, we have specialised in Focused Shockwave Therapy since 2017, helping clients nationwide achieve lasting results. For personalised guidance, our expert physiotherapy team is here to help you determine the most effective path forward.
